DESIGNER: Jessica Dauray of Elements of Style Interiors

ROOM: Family keeping room adjacent to kitchen and dining room

IN HER WORDS: "It went from a very vanilla space to a warm, userfriendly
family room. It's well-coordinated without being fussy."

KEY POINTS:
(1) Since her clients were pharmacists with two
young boys, Jessica Dauray knew that usability and storage
were key factors in selecting furniture. She chose padded,
monogrammed slipcovers for the barstools that would be
both comfortable and easily laundered, and a pomegranatecolored
corrugated vinyl wall that would protect against kicks.

(2) The most important goal of this project was to create a
seating arrangement that would help guide the fl ow between
rooms. Dauray selected an elegant iron screen to hide a desk
area without closing off the corner.

(3) Furniture and accessory
choices off er this space a panorama of natural elements. An
eco-friendly soy-based foam-fi lled chair from Hickory serves as
a focal point, while butterfl ies, pottery, and vine patterns add
organic touches amid cozy, clean lines. For information, call

DESIGNER: Laura Redd of Laura Redd Interiors

ROOM: Sun porch with magnifi cent view of the yard and garden

IN HER WORDS: "This family has a number of beloved collections,
including tea items, antique clocks, and art. I wanted to create
surroundings that would calmly blend them."

KEY POINTS:
(1) Laura Redd chose a creamy yellow wall paint
to add continuity to the sun porch and cover the exposed
brick. This particular shade helps the multi-season room
appear warm and cheerful no matter the weather outdoors.

(2) Redd's client enjoys gardening and requested window
treatments with a fl oral pattern. The curve of the valance
eases the eye and balances an otherwise linearly decorated
space. Creative cabinet knobs were used instead of traditional
window hardware.

(3) The clients needed durable furniture to
accommodate their grandchildren. Rather than purchase new
items, Redd reinspired the family's loveseat and 100-year-old
chaise by having them recovered in a matching duck cloth.
Blue accents blend the porch with the kitchen's décor. For

DESIGNER: Deborah Welch of Triad Home Transformations

ROOM: Two-story family den and adjacent kitchen

IN HER WORDS: "When I arrived, the homeowners had a For Sale
sign in their yard. He wanted to move; she didn't. By the time I
finished this project, the sign was down."

KEY POINTS:
(1) Deborah Welch selected soothing and rich wall
colors that would be a compromise between the homeowners'
tastes. Paint replaced paper to open up the kitchen — making
it seem less squatty, and more like a cohesive complement
to the den.

(2) Since the den is a two-story space, it needed
window treatments with height. Welch recommended drapes
with traditional textures, rather than trendy prints, to make
them functional for longer.

(3) To select the kitchen valance,
Welch considered the clients' love for travel and the tropics
and brought in bolts of in-stock fabric options. The one they
chose was a bit busy, so Welch stopped the pattern at one
repeat, and had it bordered with a camel-colored trim. For
