A One-stop dress-up shop

Kim Wainer knows that for girls, it isn’t so much your date for the dance, but the dress you are wearing that makes all the difference. And fortunately for young Greensboro ladies, Wainer’s boutique, Little Black Dress, is this entrepreneur’s answer to the eternal question, “What should I wear?”

“I had this dream forever,” Wainer explains. “Now I have three teenage daughters, and I saw that there really is a need for moderately priced party dresses for different dances.”

Wainer has a long history in fashion. She got her feet wet as a teen while working at The Limited and Neiman Marcus. She then majored in fashion merchandising at the University of Georgia, and after working as a buyer for Sara Lee Corporation in Winston-Salem, Wainer decided it was time to make her lifelong dream a reality.

Little Black Dress opened in mid-January, and frocks quickly flew off the rack. Although targeted to girls ages 13 and older, the shop also offers adult-sized dresses for special women’s nights out.

Customer service is Wainer’s specialty. In fact, she logs which dress is sold to what girl, and which event she plans to wear it to. “That way I am not selling the same dress to girls at the same school,” she says.

The glam boutique stocks designs from Nicole Miller, Laundry, ABS, and Wish. Prices for a short party dress range from $80 to $200, while longer, more formal gowns sell for $200 to $400. And, naturally, Little Black Dress carries shoes and accessories to finish the ensemble.

Little Black Dress, 2105 W. Cornwallis Drive, Greensboro. 336-286-8100. The store is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 pm.
