It’s a sweet concept, really — an upscale chocolate café in a midsized city. And it’s a concept that mother-daughter team Betsy Gauthier and Amie Gauthier-Moffitt believe in. “People like big-city luxuries without the inconveniences of a big city,” Amie says. “We knew this would be a good fit for Greensboro.”
As the owners of Loco for Coco Gourmet Chocolates, the area’s latest treat boutique, Betsy and Amie are passionate about giving customers quality chocolate at an affordable price. Walls of the intimate shop are painted warm shades of brown and pink, and Betsy and Amie wear matching aprons that emphasize the ladies’ fun-yet-professional style.
Tempting display cases present an array of yummy delicacies — from six varieties of turtle candies to chocolate-dipped apricots — and their signature product is a handmade Belgian truffle, which is available in 26 flavors, including sugar-free and gluten-free options.
In addition to edibles, Loco for Coco offers chocolate candles, chocolate bath soaks, and even a Chocolate-opoly game. But it’s the shop’s tasty indulgences — Betsy’s favorite is the chocolate-covered potato chips, while Amie is torn between the dark-chocolate truffle and chocolate mint — that win over the taste buds of repeat customers.
“It was a risk, putting everything on the line and starting the shop,” Amie explains. “But from the beginning we felt like it was right,” Betsy concludes. “People ask me all the time whether I’m sick of chocolate. The answer is ‘absolutely not.’ ” And with Loco for Coco in town, neither are we.
