Our first major winter storm of the season has come and gone, but we have a lot of ice left to melt and clean up. Some people are still in the dark waiting for power to be restored. The cold air blocked in place on Saturday, setting the stage for any moisture that arrives to freeze. As our system advanced north through the state on Sunday, it started as a heavy gust of snow for a few hours before changing to sleet at noon and lasted most of the day.
The snow fell heavy and quickly accumulated, but once the sleet began to fall, the snow accumulated a little, adding an icy crust to the fresh powder. Our system started to move away from us shortly after dinner time on Sunday and even brought an extra gust of snow to the Triad as it drifted away. Most of the Triad area fell in the 1-3 range, but there were some exceptions to the rule with Lexington rallying 4.There were usually higher numbers in the north and west and lower numbers in the south and east. The areas to the north and west remained snowy longer and had less sleet.
The foothills and mountains of North Carolina received a lot of snow with more than 9 reported in Boone. Notifications can be turned off at any time in your browser settings.
